Deer Hunting

America's most popular big game needs no introduction. While the total number of deer in Alberta may be dwarfed by other jurisdictions, there is no secret that we may have the highest number of trophy animals in North America.  The record book white-tailed deer are usually taken in farm country - primarily because 90% of all deer hunting takes place there! However, our area, the boreal forest north of the agricultural areas, is known to produce very heavy antlers often slightly non-typical. We have both white-tailed and mule deer, with sizes comparable to those in any other area. In the last couple of years, the white-tailed deer clearly dominates the deer population.

Seasons

The peak of the rut is the two middle weeks of November, when moose can also be hunted.  At that time the temperature can drop to below 0*F but the wood stoves keep our tents warm and cozy.

Hunting Methods

When hunting during the rut, we alternate between two basic methods, waiting in stands and still hunting. Statistically we harvest most of the deer from stands, but the choice is the hunters - some like to sit, some like to walk and some do both. Rattling and grunting are also employed.  The most successful methods are debatable.  All require dedication in the form of patience, alertness and the ability to see and hear everything without being seen or heard.  This can be difficult but rewarding when successfully implemented.

We have over 20 stands at our disposal. Some are built in trees, while others are freestanding making them easy to move.
